“All the guts and performance of a Tamoretti or Vespa 125cc retro scooter for less than half the price!”

You can order this scooter online today for just £799 and there’s even an option for next day delivery. Join hundreds of other tommy scooter fans all over the UK by owning one of your own. As you can see from the picture, the Tommy 125cc is an absolute gem of a road scooter. It has the style and flair of a traditional italian-cum-mod 60s scooter on the outside but the benefits of modern technology and fuel efficiency on the inside. The brand new ’09 Tommy Scooter will give you a 4.8L fuel tank and an average miles per gallen of about 100.

The Tommy 125 has a top speed of 55mph which is more than enough for urban riding. If you purchase before the end of this month, the Tommy also comes with a free Back Box worth approximately £70! For those of you that like to stand out form the crowd and turn some heads, the scooter also comes in four different colours; Pink Tommy Scooter, Blue Tommy Scooter, Silver Tommy Scooter and this one, the Black Tommy Scooter.

If the Tommy Scooters are a little out of your price range for the moment, then you could always down-size to a 50cc Retro Scooter instead, which will only set you back £649.

Compare the Tommy 125cc Scooter to it’s competitors in our Tommy Scooter review here and once you’ve read that and seen how much great value the Tommy is, you’ll be hard pressed not to give in and treat yourself!

The Tommy scooter is marketed as a retro styled scooter that benefits from modern technology. It comes in a few different styles and colours that all fit in with the Tommy’s nostalgic design concept. It is supposed to be on the market to compete with the Vespa’s and Tamoretti’s that are out there but it has traditionally always struggled to overcome consumers’ barriers with regards to its quality vs pricing. The Vespa LX 125cc 4T, for example, has a price tag of £2799.00 new and a reputation for quality. The Tommy 125cc however, has a substantially lower price tag of £799 and as you can imagine, such a distinct pricing difference results in an associated apprehension with regards to the Tommy’s build quality. To try and get to the bottom of the alleged quality myth, we’re going to take a look under the cover of the 125cc Tommy Scooter from Direct Bikes, the Vespa LX 125cc 4t, the Tamoretti 125cc Retro Scooter and the Znen Firenze 125cc.

Tommy 125cc Specs

In order to get an overview of the Tommy against its competitors, we need to first identify the differences in spec that each scooter offers. Surprisingly, it’s actually very hard to find any!

As you can see, the difference between the key specifications practically does not exist. The one thing you will notice however, is the price. There’s a few mpg or mph difference here and there but by no means does the Tommy 125cc come last! This makes me wonder all over again about how much difference there is between the build quality if the prices can be so different. Even if there is a build quality difference, what exactly does that mean? Perhaps it’s time to examine each bike’s build quality and source some feedback from user forums around the internet to find out more.

How Different is the Actual Build Quality?

Without seeing each bike for myself its difficult to get an accurate depiction of build quality from pictures but what I can do is consult the hundreds of other internet and scooter users out there who already own the tommy 125 or the other scooters and have posted reviews and feedback online and then summarise for you. Where I’m taking a direct quote from a review I’ve found online, I’ll include it in quotation marks.

Build Quality of the Tommy 125cc Scooter
Its a chinese-made bike for a start and if half of the world’s goods didnt actually come from China anyway I’d have my reservations. However, “much to my pleasant surprise, the build quality of the Tommy 125cc is exceptional. My father has an older Vespa (2007) and when you compare the two, yes you can see that the Vespa is made slightly different but for the price I paid for the Tommy from Direct Bikes, (£799), I won’t be complaining!”

Someone else also reports that they “bought this scooter from direct bikes and it came delivered in a crate. Ok, I thought, what’s this but after having opened it and checked it over the parts are all really well built and fit together perfectly. A great price for a great bike.”

“£799 for this compared to what I was going to pay for a Vespa was well worth it in my view. If you weren’t a scooter expert you wouldn’t even know the difference its fast, gorgeous and great quality.”

There are one or two comments regarding some inferior parts of the Tommy, but overall I’d say that the positive feedback about good build quality comes in at around 85%. I guess there will always be exceptions to any rule and whilst 85% may seem a little low or not good enough for many of you, after weighing in the price and speedy delivery of the scooter, in my opinion, its more than a fair ask. £799 vs £2799 for what seems to be a very similar ‘technical’ experience?

Scooter Petrol Consumption (mpg)

After having mentioned the mpg in the spec sheets above and with petrol prices continuing to spiral upwards in the UK, its only fitting that I make a big effort to cover this ground with this review. In most cases as I’m sure you’re aware, petrol consumption is directly associated with engine power so in theory, these 4 retro scooters should have pretty much the same petrol consumption. This is certainly one area where slight design changes and manufacturing tweaks can make all the difference.

If you look at the table above in the general comparison section, you will notice a stat for MPG (Fuel Consumption). These values are taken directly from the manufacturers’ handbooks and therefore should deliver on the figures. They are all quoted as doing approximately 100MPG with the exception of the Znen Firenze 125 who states that the scooter has “exceptional” MPG.

With this factor taken into account, it’s hard to justify the higher prices on the other models. Had the Vespa or Tamoretti listed 150MPG (or even just 10% over the Tommy 125cc quoted amount) then it would be enough to potentially offer some justification into the differences in cost. As it stands, they all deliver about the same and therefore the outright winner in this regard for me is the Tommy purely based on unit price.

“Looks that turn heads, an engine that purs and a fuel tank that’ll give you miles more for your money, why on earth wouldn’t you consider a 125cc Tommy Scooter?”

Wouldn’t you like to be able to fill a petrol tank up with £7 and ride over 100 miles in classic retro style?

Classic italian styling and head-spinning good looks are the order of the day with this 125cc Scooter from Direct Bikes. The brand new ’09 Tommy Scooter has a restricted top speed of around 60mph and is extremely economical for a scooter of its engine size. Combine its running costs with its unique, streamlined, aerodynamic good looks and you find yourself wondering why you didn’t buy a scooter like this before the recession?!

The Tommy 125 will mobilise you like never before, making zipping around in tight city streets a breeze. It’s fast enough to feel like you have power beneath your seat whilst at the same time manouvering exceptionally well and handling smoothly. Unlike the retro scooters of the 60s, the 4 stroke engine beneath this classic ride will give you a twist and go experience well worth its cost. Gears are fully automatic and the engine is electrically started. Overall its a compact retro ride that performs as well in urban jungles as it does out on the country roads. With the summer hotting up before us, the Tommy Scooter is the perfect excuse to get out into the thick of it and take those country rides youve been thinking of for the last 6 months!

As with all of the scooters available at Direct Bikes, this 125cc tommy is available in a choice of great colours and once you’ve decided on the colour you like best, click through to the payment and delivery page where you can specify next day delivery and any other extras you may want. It’s as easy as that. Your scooter will arrive the following day!
