Its no small wonder why scooters are so attractive to riders in the U.K. With the credit crunch problems in full force as well as petrol and diesel prices continuing to climb, sales of scooters rose almost 5% in June alone. In fact, the price of petrol is currently up to 117.6 pence, and diesel is up to 130.5 pence. Many people are making the transition from cars to scooters. Having lower insurance and tax rates than cars is another great benefit of riding scooters. We shall now take a more in depth look into more benefits of riding scooters in the United Kingdom.

Using scooters to navigate through towns and cities is a great way to get around in the U.K. If there ever is a problem or traffic jam, you have the ability to weave in and out of traffic to avoid it. Also, scooters are very good economical investments. For example, they are fairly inexpensive to buy, you can more easily find parking, parking is free and in relation to cars, fuel costs are nominal. In fact, a research group performed tests on scooters and their petrol consumption. They drove the largest, most fuel-guzzling scooter with a 125cc size engine for 150 miles per week. They concluded that it would cost you around 420 pounds per year to fuel the scooter. Not to mention the fact that, unlike a car, the scooters environmental impact is minimal. Additionally, bicycles, motorbikes and scooters have been exempted from the congestion charge in London.

Another benefit of riding scooters in the United Kingdom is that it is better than public transportation. Trains, for example, are limited by the fact that not every town or city has a station there. Not to mention what you might have to pay just so you can get to a particular train station. Tickets may be fairly costly, depending on what time of the day it is. Then you must wait and hope it doesn’t get cancelled. You must then repeat this same process on your way home. Buses, on the other hand, may be a bit better. The downside of riding buses is that they seem to go slow and stop frequently. And again, just like the trains, you are hoping that every bus shows up on time. Having taken all of this information into account, it seems that riding a scooter would allow you to travel more efficiently while using your own timetable.

Scooters are great for people who want to minimize their environmental footprint. Seeing as how cars have been such a popular form of transportation in the U.K. for so many years, many individuals believe that it is time for them to be more environmentally responsible. As cars have polluted our atmosphere and guzzled our fuel, scooters and mopeds would have the opposite effect. In fact, since scooters are smaller and lighter than cars, they use a very small and insignificant amount of fuel. This means they will also emit far less amounts of carbon dioxide as well. Not to mention your petrol costs will significantly decrease, too.

If you’re looking to buy a new motor scooter there are a few things you should know about engine size and type that will save you a lot of headache later on. First of all there are two main types of engines: two stroke and four stroke. Depending on which kind you buy, a motor scooter can either be an enjoyable experience or a frustrating one. So it is important to choose the right kind of scooter. Another big factor in how well your experience with motor scooters will be is what size of engine you get. Too small can leave you wanting more and possibly not take you were you need to go, and too big can be too much for you to handle or overkill for where and how far you need to travel. In this article I will cover both factors so you can buy the perfect scooter for you.

The first thing you need to know is how engine size for scooters is measured. Gas engines on scooters are measured by “cc” or cubic centimeters which is the volume of a cube measuring 1×1×1 cm. 1 cc = 1 ml. So a 150cc scooter has 150 ml of air + fuel mixture intake in a cylinder bore. 50cc is the most common size and is relatively small compared to others but sizes can exceed 800cc, which is basically just a motorcycle at that point. Depending on what size you decide to go with, scooters can travel on the interstate just fine. The exception to that is the 50cc and really anything under 125cc. So make sure you pick a size that you are comfortable with that will take you where you need to go.

The next thing to consider when purchasing a scooter, and this is a big one, is what type of engine to choose. Some manufactures will give the option between a two or four stroke engine but really this is a non issue due to several reasons. First off, most manufactures have discontinued two stroke engines because of the problems with them. They are prone to braking down much more often then four stroke and they also have a shorter life span. In the winter months, two stroke scooters will often form a film over the carburetor that will make starting next to impossible unless it is warmed up. Also changing the oil on a two stroke is a very time consuming process vs the 10-20 minute job for a four stroke. On top of all these issues is the fact that they are less fuel efficient and pollute more. So really the choice is pretty clear and even at a big discount I wouldn’t take a two stroke engine if I had the choice.

So what scooter do you actually pick? Well that’s up to you and what you need but a scooter that is 50cc is usually a good choice for teenagers or people who only travel around town without the need to get around on the freeways. They get some of the best gas mileage as well and are generally cheaper than others. If you do need to travel some distance for whatever reasons, or use the interstate, a 125cc motor scooter would probably be your best bet. 125cc scooters aren’t too hard to handle for most people and are a good compromise of speed, power, performance, and price. Do go bigger though if you want even more power. Even many of the larger scooters get good mpg compared to cars.

So now that you understand how scooter engine types can affect your experience with riding one, hopefully you’ll be able to make the right decision and pick a scooter that will be right for you. Just remember the advantages of four stroke vs two stroke and you’ll be fine.

Many of our users often ask us “How do I assemble Scooters from Direct Bikes?” so we thought we’d cut down on all the extra mailing we’re doing and make a guide about it.Direct Bikes scooters come in 50cc and 125cc varieties. They are some of the best quality, best value scooters in the UK but as with most things, in order to keep prices down, some sacrifices have to be made. One of the things Direct Bikes do with their scooters to keep the price cheap enough for us to buy, is to cut out the middlemen. This means that scooters from direct bikes don’t come fully assembled.

Don’t panic now though, the assembly process is straight forward and anyone who can handle a screwdriver can usually make the assembly changes that are necessary to get your new 125cc scooters up and running. Usually with direct bikes scooters, the only assemly that is necessary are the extra features that come with the scooter and the wing mirrors. These are very easy to fix on and can be done by almost anyone.

Here’s a snapshot of some reviews that we’ve taken from DirectBikeReviews.co.uk:

“Ordered my scooter from Direct Bikes last week and wasn’t aware it wouldn’t come assembled but it was a piece of cake to put together and the price was too good to miss. Registration took a few days but other than that, everything is excellent and I’d recommend the company to anyone looking for a cheap scooter.”

“I got my scooter last week, it comes in a steel frame to prevent damge in delivery. all i had to do was fit the battery. it took around 5 minutes to sort out and then it takes a few hours to charge. im really happy with it, just need to register it. cheap insurance, cheap moped and good quality *****”

“I recently ordered a bike from Direct Bikes. It arrived quickly and was easy to put together. I was a little unsure about how to register the bike but was offered helpful advice when I called Direct Bikes. I’m so happy to be on the road now. I love the bike and it certainly beats the congestion charge. I have recommended Direct Bikes to friends – cool bikes at a fraction of the cost of other retailers. Thank you.”

If you’d like to share your own experiences with assembling a direct bikes scooter, then contact us with your experience and we will publish it so that anyone can view it – even if you had a bad experience.

You’re considering a 50cc scooter but are not sure if all the stuff you’ve read online or what your friends have said is true. Do they really fall to pieces when you ride them? What’s the lifespan? Do you have to build it yourself? Whats wrong with it? Is it really new? All of these will be questions you’ve no doubt asked yourself when you’ve been looking at 50cc scooters online. To be fair, there’s quite a myriad of info online from all kinds of sources and it can be quite difficult to get to the bottom of it all. Hopefully this little guide will help set some of your fears aside or perhaps even confirm the ones you have.

First of all we’ll set a few ground rules. Remember that a 50cc scooter is not designed as your ultimate riding experience. There’s bigger, more powerful scooters or mopeds for that. No, the job of the 50cc is normally as a starter scooter. Something to get you going in the world of scootering or biking with minimal fuss, complication and most of all, cost. As with all things in life, much of what you get is certainly what you pay for, however because you can get such polarisations between prices on 50ccs, we realise it can be difficult to assess what sort of price range you should expect and what sort of performance you can expect from such a price range.

As a rule of thumb, a 50cc scooter is going to be restricted in speed to about 30mph, regardless of design or style. They’ll also deliver you a 50cc scooter miles per gallon of over 100 miles. An excellent mileage, you’ll agree. These things are pretty much common knowledge amongst scooterists but some questions that aren’t as common are the ones that refer to chinese-manufactured scooters and what sort of build quality they’ve been manufactured to.

Chinese 50cc Scooters – Built to Last

Since China grew into the largest manufacturing economy in the 2000s, it’s been hard for the country to lose its wham, bang, thank you mam manufacturing image. However the reality is that because there is so much pressure on chinese manufacturers now to conform to international standards, it is absolutely unavoidable for serious manufacturing companies to take their processes and quality control very seriously. This is especially true of chinese scooter manufacturers too because the reality of the situation, regardless of what you may read or hear online or from your friends, is that to even supply the scooters into the European market they need to meet strict quality and safety guidelines.

This would be true in normal economic climates but with the current pinch of global economies, it is even more important for those manufacturers in place to build products that last and stand the test of time because in this climate, only the storng will survive. And let’s face it, if you make poor quality goods that break when used you’re not going to get a lot of repeat customers are you?

This brings us nicely onto scooters and how there has been a greater shift in price vs quality over the last year or so and with demand continuing to rise, the 50cc chinese scooters coming in to the UK (and Europe) have been getting better and better in build quality.

What 50cc Scooters Should I consider?

Well, given that the 50cc scooter you’re looking for will most likely be a starter scooter, the major 2 factors will be price and safety. All road vehicles need to meet minimum safety standards and all have been rigourously tested to ensure that they do so that leaves price as the major factor in your purchase decision. If you own a scooter and need some Fuzion tires sale then take a look here. Currently in the UK, you can actually buy a 50cc scooter for less than £500! Yes, £500…Because this is a starting bike, we’d not recomend anything other than getting something that will deliver you absolute bang for your buck and the 50cc Sport Scooter will do just that.

We get hundreds of visitors each week arriving at our website looking for the best 125cc scooter. The problem with this is that it’s very difficult to advise which scooter is best because different people like different things. For example, some people prefer style, chassis type and body whilst others prefer miles per gallon, fuel efficiency or cost. In order to try and help people find out which scooter is best, in this guide we’re going to put together a comparison chart based on key buying factors.

What Key Buying Factors Exist for 125cc Scooters?

Clearly they differ from person to person but the most common factors that influence buying decisions when it comes to scooters are:

Purchase Cost

Running Cost

Style

Availability

Warranty & Support

Insurance Cost

We’ve put together a chart listing what we believe is the top 5 best 125cc scooters in the UK currently available right now based on these factors. We’ve combined our knowledge of the industry along with actual user ratings for each scooter which are openly voted on within our site.

“Take a step back in time and whisk yourself to work on a retro scooter with bags of style…”

But before you can do that, you first need to buy one and before you do that, you need to know what’s out there and at what price. We’ve taken some time out to have a look at some of the best quality 50cc retro scooters and 125cc retro scooters currently on the market. Now we have to point out here that when we use the phrase retro scooter, we are referring to brand new retro-styled scooters, not actual genuine classic scooters or vintage scooters. The remit of this buying guide is to pick out the best value scooters and give you an overview of each model whilst making you aware of any pitfalls we’ve found with either the scooter or the company selling the scooter.

Retro Scooters

Your first problem is going to be to decide how much power you need. In scooter terms, this means what engine size you’re looking for or in more layman terms, how fast do you want to be able to go? We’re looking only at 50cc and 125cc options for this review. A 50cc scooter typically has a top speed of 30mph. In the UK, you are legally allowed to ride a 50cc scooter by obtaining your CBT certificate and riding with ‘L’ plates. The same rule applies to 125cc scooters and for more information on the legalities of riding 50cc and 125cc scooters have a look here. 125cc scooters typicaly have a top speed of around 50mph. For most people, zipping around town is what they’re looking for from a scooter and we’ve found that 125cc scooters offer both performance and speed more than enough to accomplish this task for you. The price, of course, is in the pudding as it were and a 125cc will normally set you back an extra few hundred pound on initial purchase and a few extra quid a week on petrol.

Cost, Cash and Congestion

If we take a closer look at costs on each engine size and then work out costs over a year, it should help you get a picture in your mind of what would suit you best. A 50cc retro scooter’s average fuel consumption is approximately 110 miles to the gallon, or 2.8L for every 100km (.61 gallons for every 62 miles). Now most of the 50cc retro scooters that we’re going to look at in this guide have a maximum fuel capacity of 3.8L. This means you can fill up the tank for just £3.50 and get about 80 miles out of it!

A 125cc retro scooter, on the other hand, has an average max speed of 50mph. Of the 125cc retro scooters that we’ll be looking at, the average fuel consumption is approximately 3L per 100km, which works out at approximately .66 galons for 62 miles of travel. Baring in mind a 125cc fuel tank can take up to 4.8L of fuel, you’d be looking at paying around £6 per full fuel tank with an average miles per gallon of just under 100 miles to the gallon.

So costwise, the cost isn’t that much different in terms of fuel and for the sake of the £1.50 worth of fuel (probably twice a week, so an extra £3 per week), the extra performance will be well worth it.

Congestion Charges for Scooters

On top of the fuel costs you have the consideration for traffic congestion charges. Now in London, both 50cc and 125cc scooters will avoid the London congestion charge, which could save you even more money over your average car.

Insurance costs for 50cc retro scooters vs 125cc retro scooters

Obviously insurance is more difficult to calculate because insurance prices differ with each individual application based on your personal circumstances. For the purposes of our guide however, we’ll take an average 18 year old’s situation as our base. This would include no driving experience and a recently obtained CBT licence. We’ll also base our prices on the industry’s cheapest retro scooter insurer, MCE Insurance, whom we have found to provide the best quotes across the scooter industry.

– Edit, we had to remove our quote examples because each application is so different and our examples weren’t relevant enough for 80% of our visitors. Instead, we’ve decided to generalise it and can say with confidence that you will save some money on a 50cc compared to a 125cc scooter and expect this to be 10% of the purchase price of the scooter per year. MCE Insurance are still our insurer of choice, beating pretty much all other insurers that we tried.

Retro Scooters Compared

Below you will see 4 of the top retro scooter buys currently online. We’ve included 2 50cc retro scooters and 2 125cc retro scooters for comparison. We’ve bolded our star buy, which is the Traditional 50cc Retro Scooter based on price/performance – not looks! Although looks are a consideration, we’ve left that to your own tastes (women seem to luuurrvvveeee the pink retro scooter, you see, and it’s not quite to my taste )

Statistics, wise, there’s not much between them, but given the extra power in the 125cc scooters, we’d recommend considering those as a first choice. 50cc scooters are great for getting through CBT tests or as first bikes, but when it comes to true city scootering, you can’t beat the 125cc retro scooters that are currently available.

Conclusion

In our opinion, there are two great value buys online at the moment; both form the same company actually, and both well worth the small price you’ll need to part with to own them. We’d go with 125cc scooters purely because the power offered by them is enough to get you about without feeling ‘flat’ and because the slightly higher insurance costs and running costs (amounting to about 10%) are worth the extra kick. With this in mind, our two top choices would be the 125cc Tommy Scooter for just £799 and the 125cc Retro Scooter for just £749. Both scooters have the option of next day delivery for certain areas so you could actually order online today and be riding your scooter tomorrow. A great service in our view. Don’t forget to get an insurance quote for any bike you like and make sure you give MCE Insurance a try, you’ll not be dissapointed

50cc or 125cc Power?

Before doing anything else you should first familiarise yourself with the differences in engine sizes between these two models. 50cc sports scooters will generally reach a top speed of about 30mph whilst 125cc sports scooters will be able to reach speeds of almost 60mph in good road conditions. A 50cc sports scooter will also (generally) have a price tag of about £150 less than a 125cc sports scooter.

Obviously the faster you want to go, the bigger engine size you’ll need and in most cases if you’re looking for a sports scooter then somewhere in your mind you’re thinking of speed. However, before you rush off to buy the first 125cc sports scooter you see in the latest addition of BikeTrader, take a few moments to consider all of the alternatives.

Whilst 125cc may be quicker than 50cc sports scooters, they are also more expensive and cost more to run.

You can see from the table above that primarily the only technical difference between these four scooters is that the Direct Bikes 50cc Sport Scooter has a better fuel consumption figure. This is worth keeping in mind because the top speed of each scooter is restricted to the same at approx 30mph. You may find the Viper and Ninja have slightly better acceleration based on their chassis but you’d be hard pushed to notice. The other difference between the scooters is rather more obvious and that is the style.

Each scooter represented here has its own look and depending on your own tastes, this may influence your final purchase decision but at least you know that from a technical point of view, there’s very little between these four 4 stroke scooters.

Technically, the four scooters are very closely matched and you’d be hard-pressed to find any differences on paper. There are slight fluctuations in fuel tank size and chassis design but in terms of performance, they’re all very closely matched.

The one thing that does differ between models is the price but as we’ve already highlighted, for such seemingly small technical differences, are the price differences justified? Only you can answer that for yourself because each of the manufacturers listed offer different delivery options and different on the road options.

The final point to note is of course the looks. We can’t recomend a particular style for you but we can suggest you take the time to look at each model and each dealer’s website before buying.
